Recommendations to support Danish language learners

It is beyond doubt that having Danish language competency is important to integrate with the local culture. However unless someone is linguistically gifted, it takes many years to go from a beginner level to a sufficient level of Danish competency at which one can appreciate local culture. During this time, that person generally know some bits of Danish, but cannot be fully on their own in a social/professional gathering conducted in Danish. Hence, many expats get disheartened and a feeling of alienation from local society and culture sets in. This becomes one of reasons for an expat to leave for another country where they know the language at a level suitable for social and professional interaction.

To support expats in this transition phase from a beginner to an integrated citizen, some initiatives should be undertaken - Initiatives that encourage them to know more about local culture but doesn’t make them feel disconnected at the same time. Some ideas could be :

- Having at least one art appreciation tour (rundvisning) in English amongst the many conducted in Danish in the prominent museums
- Having a short introductory session before sports events or musical events where non-Danish speakers can get a context and then they can enjoy the performance. I benefited from one such introduction before a basketball match involving local teams.
- Having some of the adult learning courses on Danish politics, history, government etc. (like those offered by FOF) conducted in English.
- More resources for this group in the libraries like Danish books / digital resources for intermediate learners.
